Ocean Safety Essentials
Beach & Lifeguard Safety
Swim and surf near patrolled areas and always obey lifeguards.
Keep your surfboard out of the flags - flagged zones are for swimmers only.
Know the Ocean
Check surf reports, tides, and weather before heading out.
View conditions from the beach: look for rips, sandbanks, wave size, and currents.
Learn how to spot a rip: calm, darker channels of water moving seaward.
If caught in a rip: stay calm, float, and swim parallel to shore.
Gear & Surfing Safety
Wear a leg rope (leash) so you don’t lose your board.
Choose the right board and equipment for your ability and the conditions.
Wear a surf hat and a rash vest for sun protection.
Use reef-safe sunscreen to protect yourself and marine life.
Health & Energy
Paddle in regularly to hydrate and snack - surfing is physically demanding.
Know your limits: avoid conditions beyond your skill level.
Surf Etiquette & Awareness
Follow surf etiquette: don’t drop in, snake, or hog waves.
Be aware of other surfers and swimmers - keep a safe distance.
Communicate clearly (call “left” or “right”) to avoid collisions.
Shark & Marine Awareness
Check the SharkSmart app / shark tag apps before paddling out.
Avoid surfing at dawn, dusk, in murky waters, or after heavy rain.
Respect marine life: give turtles, dolphins, and stingrays space.
Shuffle your feet in shallow water to avoid stepping on stingrays.
Emergency Knowledge
Learn basic first aid and CPR.
Know how to signal for help (one arm wave - see picture to right).
Sun Smart
Reapply sunscreen every 2 hours (especially after being in the water).
Avoid the harsh midday sun when possible.
Never Surf Alone
Surf with a friend or let someone know your plans.
